5-Bullet Friday July 28, 2017

Hi All

 5-Bullet Friday will be your weekly dose of random information. I hope you enjoy and begin to follow!

* What I'm reading or rereading:

Last week I spoke about "When Breath Becomes Air".  I finished this book a couple days ago and here is what I took away from it.
1. Follow your path..or your heart, or your gut.
2. Be grateful to your body
3. Consider your "plan"

*What caught my attention this week:

"I'm not the strongest. I'm not the fastest. But I'm really good at suffering."  -Amelia Boone

Who is Amelia Boone?  Amelia is considered the Michael Jordan of obstacle course racing. In the 2012 Toughest Mudder ( Toughest Mudder is a 24 hour event where individuals climb through obstacles in attempt to surpass 100 miles) she placed 2nd overall, losing by only 8 minutes to the winning male competitor and beating out 999 other racers! Oh yea, she is a full time attorney.

* Fit Tip of the Week:

Rolling your foot on top of a golf ball on the floor can increase your hamstring flexibility.

* Random Weekly Fact:

    Steelers rookie and former Pitt running back James Connor has the #1 selling jersey in the NFL, surpassing our nemesis Tom Brady.   James recently moved into my building and in my few run ins he is quality kid and I wish him all the luck in the world.  He was dealt a tough hand two years ago and is proof of what hard work and dedication can accomplish!

* Golf Fit Tip of the Week:

Greg Norman has been a popular topic in our gym lately with clients and I thought this would be a great opportunity to pull from his website and backup things I have tried to put in the forefront of your fitness routines!

"Balance is necessary in maintaining appropriate spine (trunk and torso) positions throughout the swing. If balance is not maintained during the swinging action, shoulder turn, weight shift, and force transfer may be affected and the shot outcome will be compromised. As one grows older, the sensory organs and balance systems become less sensitive. It therefore might be advantageous to actually make better postural balance one of the primary parts of a conditioning program."

5-Bullet Friday

Hi All

 5-Bullet Friday will be your weekly dose of random information.  Each week each bullet will follow  the same layout, with some exceptions perhaps. I hope you enjoy and begin to follow!

* What I'm reading or rereading:
       What- "When Breath Becomes Air" by Paul Kalanithi
       Why -  We all face battles and ask questions. I love hearing peoples stories, thoughts, successes,                      and failures. This is not your typical relaxing, summer beach read but I can't recommend                      it enough.

       The Amazon review is as follows: When Breath Becomes Air is a powerful look at a stage IV lung cancer diagnosis through the eyes of a neurosurgeon. When Paul Kalanithi is given his diagnosis he is forced to see this disease, and the process of being sick, as a patient rather than a doctor--the result of his experience is not just a look at what living is and how it works from a scientific perspective, but the ins and outs of what makes life matter. This heart-wrenching book will capture you from page one and still have you thinking long after the final sentence.

* What caught my attention this week:
        This was easy.  If you haven't watched James Harrison of the Pittsburgh Steelers push an               1,800lb sled...I suggest googling it right now!

* Fit Tip of the Week:

        Top 5 Tips to Staying Fit while Traveling

           1)  Buy a super band - the giant bands near our front entrance of the gym
           2)  Travel with a TRX
           3)  Bring multiple resistance bands
           4)  Get creative in your room- desk chair dips anyone?!
           5)  Use your body weight!

* Random Weekly Fact:
          Michael Phelps is racing a Great White Shark
          Sunday, July 23rd
          Tale of the Tape - Michael Phelps (6'4" 194lbs vs Great White Shark (15-20ft approx 2 tons)

* Thought to Ponder

          It is estimated that only 22% of American adults participate in regular, sustained physical                    activity for at least 30 minutes 5 times a week.  Grab a friend and go out for a walk-nightly!

Senior Fit Update 7/19/17

Our next Senior Fit Class will be 10:15am on Saturday, July 29th with Chelsea.

Our Senior Fit Instructor for the past year, Cam, has accepted a full time job offer and will be continuing her career elsewhere.  I am very sad to have lost such a great instructor but she is advancing her career and creating her life path.  She was a fantastic asset to the Club and will be missed!

Please bare with me as I have been searching for a replacement.  Chelsea, our early morning instructor, will be filling in on July 29th.  If all goes as planned she will be our regular instructor on Saturdays at 10:15am.  The additional instructor I am seeking will fill our weekday void.

Thank you all for your patience!
